spirit of the tongva

san pedro, ca

480  sq/ft

This mural, created in collaboration with The Mural Club of San Pedro High School, honors the Tongva people as the original stewards of the land where Angel’s Gate Cultural Center now stands. Over the course of the program, students connected deeply with Tongva stories, history, and symbolism. With guidance from cultural educators Joshua and Carla, they explored themes of transformation, resilience, and ancestral presence. From the island turtle that carries creation on its back, to the tiat voyaging toward Catalina Island, every element of the mural was inspired by Tongva traditions and community teachings. The result is a powerful tribute to the Tongva’s enduring legacy and a reminder that their spirit is still present in the land, sea, and sky of San Pedro.

Learning Through Leadership

Our mural sessions with the students of San Pedro High School were grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and care. From the start, the students showed a deep desire to represent the Tongva community with respect and accuracy. They took the lead in researching Tongva history, engaging in dialogue, and thoughtfully translating what they learned into visual storytelling. With support from cultural educators Joshua and Carla, the students explored topics like creation myths, ancestral knowledge, and spiritual connections to the land and sea. Their enthusiasm and dedication shaped every aspect of the design, making this mural a true reflection of what it means to learn through art and lead with purpose.

Honoring Presence, Celebrating Process

The community paint day and mural reveal were held in honor of the Tongva people and the students who worked so hard to tell their story with care. Families, educators, and community members came together to help paint the final touches, transforming the mural into a shared expression of gratitude and recognition. The mural reveal ceremony included words of acknowledgment and appreciation for the Tongva community, grounding the moment in reflection and respect. It was more than just a celebration. It was a call to remember that the Tongva are not part of the past, but living contributors to the cultural landscape of San Pedro today.
