Standing nearly four stories tall and stretching 70 feet wide, this mural at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice was designed to match the scale of the dreams nurtured within its walls. Created in collaboration with club members through a 6-week workshop, the mural blends art with social-emotional learning, guiding youth through exercises in self-expression, storytelling, and teamwork. Participants shaped the concept from the ground up, ensuring the final design reflected their voices and values. The result is a vibrant, uplifting piece that honors the perseverance, potential, and everyday strength of the young people who call this space their own.
Path to Growth
his mural began with a single session at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, where we facilitated an artmaking workshop designed to draw out the voices of the youth. Through guided activities, we explored themes of perseverance, identity, and collective strength. These values emerged directly from the participants themselves. Even in just one session, their ideas shaped the heart of the mural. By grounding the design in their lived experiences and reflections, we created a piece that speaks to who they are and who they are becoming.
Painting With the People Who Matter Most
The community paint day brought the mural to life with the help of the very people it was made to honor. Youth members, their families, staff, and volunteers all came together to put brush to wall, transforming the space into a celebration of creativity and connection. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, music, and encouragement as participants added their own colors and energy to the design. By involving the community directly in the mural’s creation, the day became more than a painting event.
